per the instructions in the tutorial, I purchased latex floor adhesive...this stuff is so thick there is no way to spread it over the batting. Is is supposed to be like that? I was expecting it to be more like paint not glue. Any advice?

The latex carpet adhesive that I have is pretty thick....kinda like goo. I used foam brushes and brushed it on. It took a little getting used to, but it went on well and worked out great.
I don't know for sure which tutorial you are using, but I used panty hose from the skullandbone how-to.
It worked GREAT!!!!

I have used some that was very liquidy and it was hard to use and smelled awful for weeks. I finally switched to mold builder latex and buy it by the gallon now.

I only used the glue one time, and it was pretty thick too. Still kinda tacky after several years so I'm not too impressed with it. I use latex all the time now as well.

I always use liquid nails!!! It dries really REALLY fast....I also use a mix of paper towels and nylons to get my look.....The liquid nails actually makes the paper towels feel like old nasty skin....

I always use liquid latex from Screamline Studios. It dries quickly and is just as good as carpet latex.

I have been using the thicker carpet glue for a while...since I bought a big can of it....and have found that I can dilute it almost by half with ammonia (well ventilated area).
When spanning a large gap with glue and cotton, I have learned to paint the glue onto both sides of the gap, then make a bridge with the cotton and let it dry. You can then go back and glue the rest of the gap and pull the attached cotton apart to fill the void and then go over the cotton with more glue. I haven't tried it, but you could probably dilute the glue way down and then spray it over the prop to ensure that the cotton gets embedded with the glue. After the glue dries, the ammonia smell mostly goes away.
The glue does generally stay tacky. I usually detail my props with either paint or stain and I have found that this removes the tacky feeling. The world is a scary place ... I aim to make it scarier!
