I've tried all the spraypaints, even those that claim to be for plastic but none of them last.
I had to buy a 1/4 gallon of paint to try out for the outside of the house with the wife and barely used any. I was wondering if I should paint them first since I've got the paint (dark color) and spray paint black on top if it would hold better.
Any ideas from the vets?

I normally use Fusion by Krylon. Made specifically for plastic and I've had great results with it. Minor touch up each year and good to go.

Give it a lite scuff with 150 grit sand paper, dust it with primer & dust on your top coats. too thick can peel or scratch off easier. There is a clear primer ( at local auto parts store )
that is especially for priming plastics for painting. I use it when I'm airbrushing plastic parts on cars & motorcycle helmet parts.
The Krylon Fusion plastic paint is pretty good, but just doesn't etch the plastic well enough to give it a good bite for the paint.......
unless you take the time to knock down the gloss with sand paper or steel wool & etching primer, it just doesn't hold as well as good ol prepping.....When you look in the mirror at midnight,....what looks back at you.........

I used thick latex paint and it worked fine with just one coat.

I was just painting some this afternoon .....
I just make sure to scuff it up with a scotchbite pad then use the Krylon fusion paint as a base coat and it seems to be working fairly well. I was painting cannon barrels today and after I used the Fusion paint I put on a coat of the metalic texture paint. I won't know how well that is going to hold up until I try to pull the stuff out of the Halloween shed next year though.

I used a plastic primer with a normal spray paint over it. It's lasted 7 years now without a chip.
