I like sonotubes -- cheap and easy! I think my husband got ours at Lowes or Home Depot.

I used cardboard concrete tubes and added.styrofoam base and top. Worked.pretty.well. painted with spray stone texture and again with grey over black. I could send pics if you would like (halloween stuff isn't out of the attic just yet) when i get a chance. Just pm me.

I used the card board concrete poor tubes also, but I got much more elaborate.
I screewed 4 1x2s to the inside of the tube (useing washers). I then cut three circles out of "flake" board (don't know what it's called, but it's like partical board only with flakes rather then sawdust), one for the top and two for the bottom. The top circle was cut to the size of the tube top, the botom two circles were almost twice diameter (can get quite windy around here). The two botom circles were glued and screweded together. Then I cut a large hole (though smaller then the tube) and drilled two smaller holes large enough to fit 1/2" PVC pipe through. I attatched 2 pieces of 1' long 1/2" PVC to the 1x2s, for use with rebar that will be pounded into the ground. I then used L brakets to attatch the the top and bottom circles to the tube.
I then stretched and glued landscape burlap to the tube and the circles useing a 1 to 1 mix of pva and water.
After the burlap dried I mix some monster mud with a ratio of 2-1-1 of joint compond, oops paint, and play sand. I then applied two VERY thin coats of the monster mud. The first layer just sort of filled the gaps in the burlap but you could still see the cross patern of the fabric. I alowed two days for the first layer to dry. The second layer just covered the burlap so that the patern of the fabric could not be seen. I let that dry for about a week.
Two coats of Dry Lock, some dry brush of black, some cheap lighting fixtures, a bit of silicone, and some flicker bulbs.

I used the concrete tubes as well last year and put some blueboard circles that I cut out and then sat some gargoyles on top. The worked great!
