I want to build a giant pumpkin head for a new scarecrow (about twice the size I used last year (see photo below).

I will build a chickenwire framework for the pumpkin and then either cover it with MonsterMud -OR- PaperMache. What I need to know from all the MMers out there is this:

How well does light (say two 60w bulbs) pass through a decent structure make of MonsterMud?

My hope is to make a giant (4 ft diameter) pumpkin head with recessed, but not carved, features and light the whole head so it has a faint glow to it. I will then build two big branch arms and a rib cage and have the massive pumpkin scarecrow leaning down out of the pine tree overlooking the pumpkin patch.

Nope wish I could help. I am just finishing up my pumpkin scarecrow and I used paper mache. Then to cover the holes I used orange cellophane.

Do NOT quote me on this as I haven't used MM yet but I would say that even if light penetrates the MM it would more than likely have a better effect showing through the mache. If you have both available I'd do a test piece of each and see how good it looks.

I don't know that I really have the time to do both for a test. I'll try testing some PaperMache pieces from last year and see what happens. I just don't know how thick the MM would get.

I didn't mean do two heads lol sorry I should have explained better. I meant do a 12" X12" piece of each so you can see the effect. A foot square piece will be big enough to see if it will just glow where the bulb is or if it will come through on the whole thing. Process of elimination is the best testing method IMO.

Im following this thread with interest. I got the same super large pumpkin as the one you have in the pic laying on the floor there in front and similar one on the stump. I imagined to make a huge pumpkin reaper thingy but am not sure how to build him yet. Loving yours so far and the ideas.

Right, sorry. I'll see what I can do this week after work. Hoping to put things together this weekend.
