My DH was commenting tonight that he doesn't use his iPod Nano (a second gen maybe) and was thinking of selling it (we both have iPhones so it's a bit redundant). I asked him if it had video capability and he said it did. Duh! I could use it for halloween I told him! He says it's got a small screen. No problem I said. I immediately imagined one of those Haunted Portraits with the moving eye/s. Easy enough to create and provide some strapping material to the backside of the portrait to anchor the iPod. Figure the battery would last long enough for my haunt usage.

And of course it's still a great small audio source for outputting background sounds and music and would easily fit concealed in a prop with small speakers.

Home found for it! Anyone else recycling aging iPods/mp3s for their halloween haunts?

I agree, Small cheap Mp3's are always a valuable resource to us haunters. Last halloween I strapped an Mp3 player to the back of an old tube radio that happened to have a mono phonograph input jack. I recorded and edited down a bunch of "reports" from the original Night of the Living Dead , uploaded them in mono to the mp3 player, ziptied it to the vent holes in the back of the radio, plugged it into that mono input jack in the radio, and pressed play. Looked/sounded like a vintage radio playing reports of "the dead are eating the flesh of their victims...." and where the nearest shelters were. I even had one guy ask me if those reports were real! Ahhh good times!

I am using my old ipod this year. I have a backpack stereo that I got when I was a teenager and I just unearthed it awhile ago while cleaning out the basement and it gave me an idea. I'm dressing as a werewolf this year and realized that if I put a couple of growling and howling tracks on the ipod and wore the stereo under the costume I can jump out and really howl at people that should give 'em a jolt!

I used an old ipod mini with a pair of hacked pc speakers and a toy motor circuit to make a gemmy skull tell jokes last year. Worked really well.
