I am not sure of the technique that Cathy used. This is the technique that I followed:
http://www.spookyblue.com/halloween/.../fake-wood.htm
I used a dremel tool to make the grain and then further defined it with sand paper.

Thank you everyone!!!
Y'all are too sweet..
The boards were made of 1" foam; measured (approx) 4 & 3/4" x the width of my window frame; Grained them using a wood burning tool (please use nose & mouth mask if you do this.. the fumes will kill ya), but any sharp tool/ pen will do; Then painted them 2 coats of exterior, latex, black paint; dry brushed them brown (I used the medium brown, Krylon, Color Creations from Wal-mart.. it's in a quart sized can); then dry- brushed an even lighter coat of gray. Hung them using velcro. Would not recommend using velcro unless the outside temps are going to be above 70 degrees when you remove them. Otherwise the adhesive may not come off that well in cool temps.
Unfortunately, all my how-to pics have been deleted off my computer. Have to re-paint a couple of boards next year, will post pics then.
If you have any questions, please ask. Will be more than happy to help.
Thanx, again, everyone!!

Glad you mentioned that site!! Mine were made very similiar. And I forgot to mention the sandpaper. Yes, definitely went over the whole board after I grained them.. really adds to the affect.
thanx!
And great idea with the dremel! Much safer than the wood burner... still gagging from that smell!!

Love the tyke on a trike, the mourner by the tombstone, the tombstones, the Spanish moss on the tombstones, the boarded windows, the broken glass! and of course the spider victim. I guess pretty much the whole deal. Great job.
