I built a flamethrower that shoots fire out of a large (4ftx5ft) picture of a devil head. Each year the picture fades and I need to replace it. This year i wanted to sculpt a large gargoyle to breathe fire. Any advice on materials to use? Can Great Stuff be used as a base? I don't want to spend a ton. The gargoyle would be 3D but mounted to a piece of plywood so the back would be flat.

Here is the mechanics of the flamethrower. Solenoid, hooked up to propane tank with pressure regulater ball drilled out. Solenoid is bi-passed with a trickle of propane for pilot light purposes. Hooked up to a hacked fog machine timer. Shoots 10 ft flames for 3 seconds every 2 minutes. Mounted 18 ft off ground far from party guests.

You might try Monster Mud for your gargoyle.

Monster mud is a great idea...I've built a few things out of it (cauldron this year)...it looks just like stone, it's durable (I made a blood fountain out of it and it didn't wear at all on the water path, nor did it stain red), and I'm sure it's flame retardant.

Can you sculpt monster mud or do you paint it on after you have some sort of base?
I agree it is a gutsy prop but it is put up for an adult party only, no TOTs, fire extinguisher handy, and a yearly fireman at the party. The police did come last year because of the loudness of the band and they did not mind. I will take video of it this year.
