OK...Finally! I stumbled upon an affordable projector for us haunters. It's at CVS Pharmacy.
It isn't the horrible eyeclops or the wonderwall, or the ridiculously overpriced torpedo. This one is priced less than 100. and is currently on sale for 89.99. The picture quality isn't half bad(for a toy projector), the bulb (if it burns out) can be replaced for as little as $6, and even accepts a higher lumen led bulb. The lumen count is about 100 lumens or about as bright as a 60watt incandescent (which is bright enough for most of our needs)
It also features: contrast adjustment, sharpening via the lens, and audio out jack...and the RCA cables. The built in speaker is surprisingly clear and loud. The only downside so far is...the projector's body is...white!
But hey, for $90 it's not that bad! It's a happy medium between the Eyeclops projector and the $200 Ultra projector.
Here's the CVS link

By the way, in stores its $100 so you save a little online. Plus if you have a CVS carecard you can save even more!
Just thought you all should know!

Sorry you missed my post under the 2010 Shopping thread two Sundays ago Eyegor because it could have saved you a few more dollars. It was on sale during the week of 9/12 - 9/18 for $79. I see CVS has updated the item link with the new price this week.

Eyegore, what are you using it for? I am looking to setup a hallowindow type display in a garage door, so it would still have to look ok on a larger scale. Think that would work?

It "would" work, but you probably wouldn't be happy with the image quality.
Any image bigger than 80" diagonal starts too look very pixelated.
It's good for smaller stuff like signing pumpkins, talking bust, etc.
I will experiment with hooking it up to the hallowindows DVD this weekend and see if it looks ok.
I'll keep you posted.

OK, well I ran the Hallowindow II footage through it and was pleasantly surprised.
It worked but the image was dimly lit. So I maximized the contrast and increased the color, and the image was a lot better; about twice as bright! At 80" diagonal it starts to get pixelated. I defocused the lens a little and that helped a good bit.
If you plan on using it for the Hallowindows setup you need to have total darkness in the room and absolutely NO ambient light on the outside of the window. Any stray light will diminish the already somewhat dark picture.
I plan on swapping out the mr-16 bulb for a super bright mr-16 LED replacement. The LED alternative should bump the brightness up another 15-20 lumens.
A notable increase!
With a few tweaks you should be able to make this work with Hallowindow dvds.
