I am in the process of putting together a flaming pumpkin similar to the on in the "Sam" ep of Trick 'r Treat. I saw that ScarefX did one, but he did did it the "easy" way with a Chauvet Bob Jr. Faux Flame. I'm on a budget, so I wanted to use a string of orange LED's, a silk flame and computer case fan. I have just about everything. I carved the faux pumpkin from Michaels. Got a couple of strings of orange LED lights, and a couple of yards of silk for the flame. I am having issues with the fan, however. I have a 120mm Cooler Master LED PC case fan. It puts out 90fm at 2000rpm, but it does't even begin to move a test 8x10 piece of silk. I chose the 120mm because the Bob Jr's dimensions are 127x127x128. Anyone know of a fan that can get the job done?

Is the test fan in open air (ie no enclosure around it to limit its airflow)? What about using a larger box fan similar to what would supply airflow to a computer or electronics console? Might provide more airflow. Also, have you tried varying the distance from the fan to the silk? The cfm my only be developed at a certain distance from the spinning blades. Just some thoughts, keep posted on what you come up with. Keith

Had the same problem. If you cut a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin it will help. Also try to build some sort of a wind "funnel" to direct/concentrate the air flow.

Well I figured it out! I started by purchasing a hanging caulderon flame light from Spirit. They work off the same concept that I was trying to achieve. Using a 80mm fan, silk flames, and a couple of halogen bulbs with amber covers. These looked ok, but the fan was pretty weak and the silk flames were too short. I unscrewed the housing from the caulderon. threw out the fan and put on an 80mm Delta fan (about 200 CFM and LOUD!). I then cut my own silk flame. I painted the housing yellow and then glued it into the pumpkin. That did the trick! It worked out so awesome that I made a second one (Carved to look like Jack Skellington's Scarecrow). Here is a foto of them in action on 10-31.
