Haha - believe it or not, I was dumb enough to try the fan motor idea and it's definately not powerful enough.

You might wish to keep the fan motor for a secondary effect.
In addition to a more powerful motor for lid raising and box rocking - try attaching a lightweight metal chain (think the ones used to link pens to a desk) to the fan motor. Put this in a coffe can or otherwise surround with some metal or plastic. When turned on it will make a nice racket and rattle. The chain should be pretty short as to not get wrapped around motor. I also suggest mounting motor so that shaft faces down, so when turned off, the chain simply falls downward away from motor.
With a great soundtrack and some good speakers, you can achive the same effect safer, but 'real sound' is hard to beat sometimes.
