I'm sure there are others who may be more versed in pure sculpting, but I would try to patch the cracks with paper clay. It smooths very nicely.
I've used model magic extensively, but it has never cracked on me.Doctor Grim

That's what it does. I think it does that more when it's thick. Here's my suggestion. Get a package of Paperclay and use that to fill in the cracks. It's air dry clay too so it should adhere well: http://www.paperclay.com/

Sorry Chaserbug, you should've checked this thread in the review section, Crayola Air Dry Clay is Crap, Don't Use It before you started.

I've used it to make features, like eyes, ears, teeth, finger nails, some facial details. I'm unsure what thickness would cause cracking (I'm sure it does), but I haven't experienced it. Some of the applications are from last halloween, and they are ok.
I really like model magic. The only problem I have is that it tends to be rubbery, so fine details are sometimes not possible. Usually model magic as a base, and paper clay as a fine top coat for details where needed.Doctor Grim

I just did two heads in Model Magic. They cracked also. I used spackel with a small paint brush to patch the cracks and it worked perfect (It dries fast and can be smoothed or sanded nicely). After they dried I painted them with 2 or so coats acrylic, touched up the details, let the paint fully dry and coated them with 3 or so coats of spray lacquer. Seems to have worked out pretty good. I made the heads so I can pull them off of the bodies if it rains or even before sleep.
