VEI V-0106 Mini-Flame Hanging Lighting Effect

I am starting my plans for my cemetery gates. I want two towers with an evil archway. Each tower will have a gargoyle and a fire cauldron like this as "lights" to "light" the entrance.

Was thinking, "Well, I got plenty of computer chassis fans and I can spraypaint some shredded plastic bags for the flame, and some painted mixing bowls for the cauldrons..." but then found this guy for 25 bucks. That's quite tempting.

But it seems small. Would love something twice the diameter.

So what other already-made options are out there? One less part to build myself, means more time detailing my archway and building the fences.

You know, since you've brought this up. I work at a computer repair shop! We have 120mm fans up here that would be great for these projects! Plus, I have access to used ones I can snag too!

Let me know if you want to try one or two. You'll need to convert 12v power to them somehow, but I can send you one or two if you'd like. Pay for shipping : P

BTW: That's about it really. As far as premade options. I mean, you can ALWAYS modify these fans! Typically, the fabric they put on these things, will get old and "stick" together. Find some good SILK and make your flames out of. Or, you can try plastic, which I haven't tried yet, but I can only imagine it making noise, which could be good or bad, depending on how "fake" the sound makes it.

Another way to present the cauldron prop is with a fish tank bubbler and green Cyalume Lightsticks:

    Parts:
    Fish take pump -

    Chem Lights -

    Bugs -

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Halloween-Creepy...item3a5ed37d73

Use several good quality light sticks. A valve on the pump will control the amount of bubbles it produces and toss in a bunch of floating plastic spiders and worms, etc. This produces a green glowing bubbly cauldron effect.

Hint: Hide the bubbler hose by routing it behind the caudron stirrer.

Suggestion: This same prop can also be used to serve drinks or in your punch bowl -- just wash everything thoroughly before you put it in the drink...

If noise is an issue, I might recommend staying away from the plastic bags, and going with thin strips of silk-type fabric. anything white and light will work (check out the cheapo fabrics at walmart for 2 bucks a yard).

@harmonicaman: Great idea! I may use this in my haunted house this year!

Last year, someone made a ghost's campfire using a box fan, painted plastic bags, and orange and yellow spotlights below the fan. Wanted to miniature-ize this idea, and have torches or coal cauldrons. So, the quiet-running computer fans and some white silk airbrushed or dip-dyed would get me where I want to be. But these are DONE. Heh heh.

I think these cauldrons would be good enough, but torches, good ol fashioned iron-basket-looking movie torches would look cooler. Cardboard or maybe plastic bottles for the framework, quiet running cpu fans like we used on my brother's entertainment center for cooling his stereo, and some creative foam/pvc pipe work would get me killer torches. Luckily, MicroCenter is close by and sells all kinds of cool stuff for these small fans.

So if I build them, you'll see the tutorial.

Either way, you'll see the archway tutorial! MOOOAAAHAHAHAHAAA!!!

Me so evil. Me haunt you long time.
