This being our first haunt we decided to go with an easy theme, vampires (the real ones, not the girly ones that have gotten popular recently). But since I'm new I wanted to know if there were any props or devices that are must have, for this or any other theme.

I already plan on getting a couple cheap smoke machines and have a low lying fog in the small space in front of my door and a coffin slightly raised with a few candlebra around it. I'm only working with a 154 sq foot space to close off.

Any basic ideas or advice is much apreciated. Pictures of said area should be below.

It's probably a bit late to start, but if you can carve out some time for homemade props...life size vampires in the yard, in windows (with creepy lights in background) bats hanging on fishing line at your front stoop, cobwebs, etc.

you could buy a few cheap-o vampire masks and tape them to your front windows (looking out) hang some black fabric behind it like a drape and shine a small light on it at the right angle. It would look like just the vampire's faces were floating in the windows.

Hint; I have used two half white egg shells for eyes for masks, just let them dry out then coat the inside with hot glue for strength. Paint them if you like, but left solid white is very creepy.

Thanks Mad Mad Mark I like those ideas. I don't have much animation in my haunt so that could make up for it. Creepy Crawler lol, yeah it was wierd, he even had my last name! CONVIENIENCE!! Ha ha I just took the pictures as I was leaving the house sorry about that.

One year we did a dashingly dressed vampire (PVC pipe frame, mask with lit eyes, cummerbund, dark trousers, white shirt, long black cape, wingtips) leaning over a a pretty blonde that had fainted over his arm. (picture a dance move with the lady bent back over the gent's arm)She was dressed in a filmy peignoir(sp?) her long blonde hair hid that she actually was faceless. She was also a pvc pipe frame. We wired her to him. Added fog, mood lighting and moody music. Nearby was his plush satin lined coffin with pillow. lol was pretty and creepy all in one.
Even quicker would be a reclining vampire that is just waking and climbing out of the coffin. Prop the coffin lid open a bit so it looks like his hand is pushing the lid up and have his eyes peering out over the edge of the coffin. Fog, strobe, sound.
Always thought there were 36 hours to a day. What shock to find out there are only 24.

Very good ideas! They sound relativley cheap as well, I like that! now I was going to have a fog in the small area... Should I get a couple cheap small fog machines with Froggy's Freezin Fog Juice or one descent machine with the same juice. I wanted to have fog billowing out of the coffin as the senter piece accompinied by an ominous glow from inside...

Im sure this has been posted on HF before, but If you need some cheap coffins, I found this http://scarefx.com/project_coffin.html To be extremely helpful in building mine!

Price of materials is now a bit more than when they made this, but I was able to build mine for $35, and with proper reinforcement, I am able to lay in it and scare those greedy-candy-grubbing TOTs!

I don't know a car seat & diaper bag sends chills down my spine, 4 of my own. Great House.
Have tons of coffins with friends as vampires inside, have the lights on out side. Tell people when the come up the lights are special UV lights to keep Vampires away, then the lights flicker & go out. The Vampires start rising, different lifgting sound effects.
