I am animating props for the first time. Is there anything I need to know before I place my props outside? Can they operate in the rain? If so how should I protect the motors? Thanks.

There's no need to cover a wiper motor from the rain

yeah because most wiper motors get rain on them when they are on cars anyway

I'd like to add,
As long as you have not BROKEN into the casing. I had to break plastic off of one of mine to see inside. It was a mid 90's S10 wiper motor. I was told "Just get the plastic cover off and you should have 2 wires in there before the circuit board. ANNHHHH! Wrong. lol. So mine? I will have to cover mine when I put mine outside.
I have exposed motor wrapping, brushes and gears that are exposed that will need to be covered better. The plastic covering on mine is busted up, but provides enough protection for the gears as far as mechanical, like fabric getting on top of the motor.
As long as yours hasn't been cracked or broken on the plastic, you should be good to go.
As them boys have said, these motors were designed to have water splashed on them all the time and be safe.

Thanks guys! I am obviously a complete electronics dweeb. I guess I was more concerned about the quick conect and power pack that I purchased from monster.

If you want to use extra caution you can always hot glue the connection to make it water tight.
I personally don't think you need to take any extra caution and it will work fine and safe but the hot glue would give you piece of mind.
