I just cant seem to figure this program out.
Just dosent seem intuitive at all.
all I need to do is select a portion of a track and add it to the original track, thus making the original track bigger.
then add ing additional sounds at different points in the original track.
any advice/help on how to do this???

Once you figure Audacity out, it's like riding a bicycle......although not very user-friendly. You can add as many tracks or sounds as you like and add effects (fade in, fade out etc.) and then output the finished product in just about any format you wish (have the Lame codec installed). If you need any help at all, get in touch with me and i will walk you through the basics or even do a track for you if you wish......let me know......'Scruff

Audacity is about as user-friendly as any audio program can get! It just takes time to get the hang of it.
Select the track by highlighting it, then go to Effect, "repeat". Repeat as many times as you need. Next, click Tracks, and select "new audio track". This will allow you to add new audio sounds. Click file open, and find the new audio file you would like to add. Add those files to the empty "new audio track" timeline and arrange them so that mesh with your pre-existing audio (the track you repeated). Once to your liking, click Edit, "Select All" and then merge the two tracks together using Tracks "Mix and Render" and finally save as .wav or .mp3.
Done!

Okay no I figured out the placement of the tracks.
But how do you increase the volume of each track.
I need to raise some and lower others.
I see slider controls to the left. but it is Gain and balance.
tried the amplify feature under effects.
But that isnt right.

you need to normalize all your tracks before you drop them into your timeline.

I know at least 3 ways to adjust the volume.
1) Gain = decreases volume, can increase, but not recommended
2) Amplify= decrease or increase volume based on decimal percentage
3) envelope tool ( button next to the I-beam ) = decrease/increase/fade in or out/etc
And yes, you should "normalize" all imported audio. Normalize twice! Once before edits, and once after (before exporting).

Thanks Eyegore.
I would have never thought to use the Normalize. I think that helped alot.
what exactly does it do?

It brings all your tracks to a normal level, the ones that are too quiet will be brought up and the ones that are too loud will be turned down.
