There is an air hardening clay that you can buy at the craft stores. I think that Crayola makes an air dry modeling compound too, but I think it stays spongy. Do you have a Fred Meyer in your area? I saw the air hardening clay in the art department at Fred Meyer.

Also, Paperclay. Paperclay is a dream but expensive. DAS clay is okay and cheap.

I recently used the Crayola air hardening clay for a mask and ribs for my Apocalypse Ponies. I thought it worked reasonably well and dried pretty quickly. It took spray paint well and overall I'm happy with it. Hope this helps!

Was the Crayola clay still spongy when it dried?

No, it does dry hard. There is a Crayola clay that is specifically designed to have that spongy feel, but the one I used dries hard.
