I am soooo glad I went this route. I have learned a lot of technique (and patience, I want it done NOW ) First layer of Celluclay is on and I love it! I tried a trick to see if it would work and so far, so good. I wanted a base color to the celluclay to help with overall look. While looking through Michael's for the stuff, I came across powder dye for mixing with stone mix for mosaic, I decided to try. You can see the results yourself!

And close up detail showing the 'wood grain' or bark look I tried to add.

I think this body is so much better than the first and will work great with the head when all done.

    It looks great.

I think your idea is perfect because when I first looked at the picture (before reading the post) I thought you had used wood to creat a skeleton somehow. :-)

I, too, am soooo glad you went this route. The branch/grapevine had potential, but this is just awesome. The wood effect is great and brings a "life" to the project that real wood couldn't. How DID you make the grooves? I haven't yet made a figure prop, but will someday (because we have four small grandkids, I am not yet allowed to do "scary" by the CFO. At this point, it's mostly pumpkins, birds, scarecrows, blowmolds and lights.)

It has been a slow process, I did one side at a time with the celluclay and allowed to get totally hard. I made a PVC frame and screwed her to it for extra support and of course a stand! I clayed over that as well. I am on the final stages and I am excited. I painted a 1/2 Latex paint, 1/2 glue mixture to give a coat of protection and am in the final process of dry brushing details.

    The PVC frame before celluclay

    After celluclay was added

And close up showing dry-brushing. This is the actually the bottom, so this is one part where the original body meets the PVC as well.
