So, this is my first prop ever built and while I'm enjoying it I still have a lot to go. I've tried to distress the wood and make it look as realistic as possible with only using a hammer. The picutre dosen't do it justice.
I was going for organized chaos with the board layout. When it is all done it will be a bangger.
What do you think?

Looks good. Maybe try slapping some wood stain between boards and letting it drip for an old creepy look...

i like the look a lot. Did you just beat the hell out of it with the hammer?
"...And out of the darkness, the Zombie did call
True pain and suffering he brought to them all
Away ran the children to hide in their beds,
for fear that the devil would chop off their heads..."

Another excellent distressing tool is a short (2-3') length of heavy chain. You can beat the prop well, and dragging it across as you swing adds to the effect. (This is how some cabinet companies predistress pine cabinets and furniture.)

I actually used the claw part of the hammer to distress the wood. Doing this created deep groves. It's hard to tell from the pictures that I uploaded. I'll post better pics on its finished.
