I really want to make a laser vortex using a green laser diode from ebay but I am worried that running the laser for an extended period will ruin it. Has anyone else done this? Should I make a timer circuit using a LM555 to turn it off and back on? Any recommendations for who to buy diodes from? I hate to make it and have the laser crap out after afew minutes.

I purchased two from Ebay 2 years ago. Came from China or Japan, I think. One of them burned out within half an hour, the other didn't have any issues at all. I would definitely suggest you order more than one - just in case.
