I haven't been on this forum for a long time, so I'll just assume this hasn't seen done before. Now, let me tell you my inspiration for this prop before I go into it. I was on vacation in canada last week, and my parent and I were walking around the streets checking out interesting shops. We came across a VERY interesting one. It was a vintage clothes shop, but it was filled with incredible werdness (yeah I have no other way to describe it). Heres what I mean:
But there was a recurring theme I noticed while in there: MANNEQUINS
I found the coolest thing ever... styrofoam heads mutilated:
I got some major inspiration from this so I asked to buy some clean heads. Then I did it.
What I did here was literally just spray red spray paint on the head. The spray paint eats away at the styrofoam leaving you with an awesome little effect. For the larger gashes I just dug out some styrofoam and then sprayed it. I'll probably get a flesh color paint so I can just paint it. And thats pretty much it![]()

Cool effect! Great to just have them laying around.

I wonder if there's an easy way to make them skin colored first and then be able to "eat away" with red.

You would have to mask off the sections you want to gore-up with spray paint, then use latex or acrylic paints to make the flesh colors all over the head. Peel off the masking (tape or glue-sticked paper cutouts) and spray over the wounds to eat them away. Add hair from Sallys beauty supply, they have hair extensions for around 4 bucks in all colors. Use Easy Eyes pupils and epoxy to make realistic eyes, and you're all set. A bit more complex, but still easy. Amazing the tihngs you can do with those styrofoam heads.

I made a bunch of these about 7 or 8 years ago, when the mannaquinheads at sallys beauty supply only charged $2 a head. Some I painted black, added some hair from sallys and then put LED eyes in the socket by heating a wire hanger and then making a spot in the back to rest the battery pack on. My favorite one, I painted flesh color, used my real makeupon her, added blonde hair, and then put a gash across her face and used one red LED eye...then I put her head on a screwdriver haha morbid and then I stake her in the grass. I gotta find a pic of her...somewhere?!. Those heads are super fun to work with!

One year I painted one in reds and blacks all over and placed it in one of those rotisseri chicken cooker things. There is a setting for NO HEAT and it just spins. I laid foil in the bottom for reflection and placed a red glow stick in it to make it glow like it was cooking...really cool effect!
