Has anyone ever tried to make one of the plaster spider eggs from the MS website? I tried this weekend and the plaster was to thin and after about fifteen minutes of rolling it around to cover the inside of the balloon, it exploded covering me and my kitchen in plaster dust. I used the 1 to 1/2 ratio they suggested but it would not stick to the balloon sides. Really want to have one of these for a display but don't want to repeat this experience. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Just went to her site & read the directions. They sound like they're more trouble than they're worth!
Not to be mean, but I would love to have seen that balloon pop! I think if it'd been me I would've laughed so hard I would've cried because that is exactly the kind of thing that happens to me. Then I would've really cried because I would be the one cleaning it all up.
If it'd been the hubby he'd have cursed so loudly people in Canada would've heard it.
I'd try it in paper mache instead.

I'm sure the project works wonderfully if you're using the most expensive helium-grade balloons on the market. I don't see it turning out to well with what can be picked up at the party store. That, and you used regular tap water, not imported bottled water pulled out of the river with the leaves of an endangered tree species.

I'm a big Martha fan and hate how hard it is to tell what projects will or won't work. Her pumpkin decorations are top notch (I loved the snake, and now there are alligators and owls, too) and she has some great decorations with fabric. But some of the stuff can't possibly work.

Would a thin layer of plaster like that be even more fragile than a real egg?
I don't like my Halloween decorations to be that fragile. I'm assuming it's an indoor decoration, but even so, it seems almost like it's made to break.Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, the best damn little band you should be listening to!

I got the Martha Stewart Halloween magazine a few years ago and she had Spider egg sacks in it. I think the egg sacks were more realistic looking than the egg, plus they were a ton easier to make. You just need cheep knee high stockings, polyfil, plastic spiders and a Styrofoam ball. I wanted mine to hang lower so I pushed craft stones(clear glass ones) into the ball to weigh it down a bit. I still have them and use them. I think they are 3 years old now

I made some a couple of years ago and it was an epic fail. They break too easily when you pop the balloon or try to make an opening in the egg. I love the way they look but they are just too fragile.

I just looked at the spider eggs...they look really wicked! I love Martha's crafts and I always look forward to her Halloween magazine. I am a teacher and last year we made a papier mache solar system...I found that using tracing paper instead of newspaper worked really well! I am wondering if trying that on the outside of a balloon wouldn't look just as cool?

i made mine from white stockings that I found at good will for cheep some fibre fill from an d old pillow and golf balls , my father works at a golf corse so he gets t hem by the tonne covered them with webbing and lots of tiny baby spiders from the dollar store the golf balls give it the egg apperance and weight in the stockings so that when they hang the stocking will streach out

I tried.. didn't work. Stupid, stupid, stupid idea. ha!!
Some of Martha's ideas are good, some annoy the heck out of me.
This falls into the ANNOY category.
