I decided to create a signpost for my pirate-themed garage haunt this year, but I didn't want something that looked thrown together. I wanted something "furniture-grade" that I could display year round, and something that possessed some interesting lines. When I spotted this coat rack on Craigslist for $15, I had just what I needed.
I altered the base to conceal its origins, used basswood from a craft store to make the signs, and found a black votive lantern at a yard sale. Painting a faux patina on the lantern and whitewashing the assembled piece gave me this.
I used a tip from this train modeler website and applied an ink and rubbing alcohol stain to the wood to give it a gray weathered look. After a little more painting and accessorizing, I ended up with this:
The signpost stands about 6 feet tall (the inquisitive cat in the first pic provides some scale), big enough to loom over TOTs but still very portable. The snake may be a little over the top - what do you all think?

I really like!! Maybe you can make the snake wrap a little farther down the pole? Looks a little crowded at the top. But otherwise it's awesome!
