hello everyone. I have 2 wiper motors and don't know how to
hook them up to use them. I know it has to be dc and 12 volt
but don't know how to do that.
    Thank you.

Do you have the 12VDC power supplies you'll need to run them? I recommend at least 5A supplies. You can hack an old computer power supply to run wiper motors. As far as where the wires go, I'd need to see the motor terminals. Got any pics?
    I...have many names...

What do you intend to make with them? Will motor speed be an issue?

A lot depends on your motor (# of pins? auto-park when turns off?), but if you don't have a specific RPM in mind, hacking an old computer power supply is a great option. I've used 3V, 5V, or 12V connections on the same type of power supply depending on what speed I needed. We've scavenged power supplies off our old beater computers, I have family members on the lookout for them, and I've bought 1-2 from larger thrift stores for a few bucks each.

A great place to start is Scary Terry's pages on the subject:

Even if your motor is slightly different, the same principles apply.

If your wiper motors have part #s on them, look up the specs if you can to see which pins are ground/high/low/park etc. Although, even if you hook it up wrong momentarily, it shouldn't hurt the motor. Those little dudes are tough!

hello , stumbled on this thread and was about to order some wiper motors from monsterguts and was a bit loss in my choice ......so the power supply will determine the speed it goes ( turns )? so a 5 v goes slow and a 12v goes faster right ?

I prefer to give the motor all the power it needs (12v and sufficient amps for the job) and regulate the speed with a controller. That way the prop has full use of the torque of the motor at whatever you speed you want to operate it at.

ok but for a simple rocking chair project is that really necessary ?

Well now, Barney likes to rock slow so's not to get too dizzy, so I guess it all depends on how you like to rock!

Seriously, for a rocking chair, probably not, unless you really wanted to fine tune the motion. I think there was another post somewhere recently (Otaku perhaps?) where the poster wired a wiper motor to a 3.7v supply for a rocking chair and found it to be quite adequate, with no stress on the motor. For bigger/heavier projects (like that carousel thing you're looking at!) you're going to want power.
