Yeah, I've mentioned this before, but I was looking to have my Elvira hold a skull candle. The thing of it is, a resin skull, while cool looking is currently out of my budget.

I'm going to have use what I have at hand to accomplish this. I am planning on using a leftover Blucky(Bucky?) skull from one of those cheap 6' WalMart plastic skeletons.

I was checking out some of the video tutorials, but I'm at a bit of a disadvantage, not being able to hear it. I'm still using the outdated laptop w/o sound playback)

So as I was saying, I need to make my cheap skull look not so cheap. I was thinking along the lines of modeling clay/sculpey/primo to 'bring to life' my skull and make it a bit more organic, and a bit less '.99 cent store'.

So, anyone with some specific recommendations as to a type or brand that works better than the others?

Well I may have a tentative solution. I refer to a pair of pics that I posted on the 'what did you find/buy today' thread.

I think what I'm going to do is use the skull that came with the PVC framework that jdubbya sent me as a model. Not literally, as it's about half again as big as my blucky skull. But I think I'll place clay on the larger of the two in the approximate shape, only slightly smaller.

Then I'll transfer it over, removing any undue excess, and see how that works out. I need to get some disposable cameras anyway to take pics of this years' haunt so I'll try and take pics of progress, if any...

Well haven't started yet, so no pics at this point. I queried Lauriebeast as to the type(s) of materials she'd use. She was very helpful, but perhaps not in the way she intended. I went to price the items in question, and I may have to go in another direction.

Y'see, I want my skull to LOOK like it cost me $40 or more, without spending $40 or more in materials. Otherwise, I may as well go and buy the clear Bucky/Blucky skull for $40 or more, and save myself a whole lot of time and trouble...

But I have come up with a cheaper solution, (I think) for $10 I get some of that new 'U-Glu' and place it all over the front of the skull from just above the brow line down and around the jaw and maybe as far back as the temple.

Then I apply 'Crayola Air Dry Clay' to the 'U-Glu', which bonds 'anything to anything' and build it up from there. Then after it dries, paint it to give it a more organic/aged look. Then I take and place the 'flicker candle', already painted (blood red), with the socket/bulb already in place, including the hot glue around the top and dripping down the sides.

Then to secure it at the base of the skull with more hot glue, and paint it red as well, dripping down the sides of the skull. If I have any leftover clay, I may well place some on the back end near the bottom to give it some balance, and so it will rest 'flat' in an upright position...
