Hi everyone. I'm newbie to prop building and am starting my first big project this halloween. I'm looking to make some kind of slotted crate, maybe out of cardboard, but not sure how to go about doing so. Have any of you guys attempted this?

    Kinda looks like this:

I would make them out of old wooden fence panels...look on craigslist and you will be able to get them for free or they are less than a dollar each at the hardware store (though free is good and they are already weathered). Should be more realistic than cardboard.

If you want to use cardboard go to Stolloween.com and look under Buster Gravesley coffin construction or go to AranaMuerta.com and look at painting Faux wood shelves. Both of these show great techniques for using cardboard.

Those look like wine crates. You may want to check with a local wine shop/distributor to see if they will give you a few empty crates.
Or, if you are over 21, get them full and enjoy yourself before you turn the crates into props!

that's what i was gonna say!
my husband used to manage the produce department of a big grocery store. he always got in a few wooden crates. green beans come in them.
they are typically just thrown away and can be had for the asking!

Michael's and Joann's Fabrics sells unfinished wood ones for $10. I always use the 40% off coupon to get them for $6. Brush on some watery brown craft paint (not too well mixed, so you get streaks) and it looks pretty good. Watered-down gray paint should get you the look you desire.

I used pallets to make my Treasure chest, which looks kind of like a crate. I got the pallets free through Craig's List. I used a propane torch to age the wood. Here are some pics without the lid:
