I guess that really depends on what you are using them for. If you are lifting something pretty heavy and using higher PSI, I would go stainlees steel. If it something lighter then aluminum would be fine. I think if the price is almost the same and you are getting same bore diameter and throw then I would probably always get the steel, just for the better strength.

You have to remember that all of these cylinders are usually made for an industrial application.......... That said , When you spec out a cylinder you typically look at the enviroment it will be used in ,size, availability, and last but not least .do you want to re-build it or throw it away? I have used both and it really boils down to what are the basic requirements. A stainless steel cylinder that is rated for 150 PSI is equal to an aluminuim cylinder rated at the same PSI, there will be a difference in the size, but not usually a big deal
If it were me I would look at brand names , and if the same brand go stainless..........more options for uses..........

There is a little difference between them. You want a stainless steel cylinder when used around water. Aluminum corrodes but it does not rust. So if you have a cylinder submerged in water use SS. An example would be a water filled barrel that has a prop pop out of it. Really the difference in price isn't much so the ideal cylinder would be the SS.

Most of my props are SS, but I do have some aluminum. 8 SS, 3 AL
