I just had a new (and long overdue) patio door installed today. Beautiful and actually works!
I asked the guys to leave the large stationary piece of the old sliding glass door if they could remove it without breaking the glass and they did.
So now I have a 9 x 4 foot piece of glass that is framed out in aluminum and has minimal scratches. I figure on cleaning it really well and using it inside the house in a room for the pepper's ghost effect for my haunted rocking chair. I'm going to put the rocker in the room, have the door about three-fourths of the way open and have cheesecloth hanging down in a thick cobwebby effect to hide the frame (may have to remove it from side) and make it look like there's a real ghost rocking that chair.
Sometimes home improvements have a double bonus!
Anyone else have any stuff they've made with former house parts after a renovation? I've got a few more improvements lined up and could use some more ideas...

Frankie's Girl,
That's really funny. I have been saving the stationary half of our old patio door for years for the same reason.
My wife thinks I'm nuts and, during each full cleaning of the garage, she asks me to get rid of it. I just argue that it doesn't "actually" take up space (It's leaning up against the wall). One of these days I'll put something together for a pepper's ghost.
Thanks, I'll be sure to show her your post.

I installed my own patio door last year and intended to keep the old one until I had to carry it off to storage. I could not believe how heavy a circa 1970 slider was!!!!!! I was afraid it might fall and crush someone and threw it away.

When we got a new shower door, I immediately used the old one for a haunted window prop!

lol.. I'm a pack rat when it comes to anything remotely prop related! I think I'm going to end up on that Hoarders show.. maybe for a Halloween special.. hehe! Totally awesome recycling stuff and using it for props! I was going to get rid of my old trash bin compartment made out of wood after buying a new stainless steel one, but the look and style looked perfect for a podium, so I tore it apart and sanded everything getting the years of gunk and grime off and it will be the new stand for taking pictures (when I put it back together.. that's a different story) for some of my smaller props and maybe a display shelf in my room for my new works!
Can't wait to see what your peppers ghost effect looks like! I so want to do one!

YOU ROCK, I have a new pane for my patio door as the low-E gas has escaped. I never thought to save the glass for a peppers ghost. Always wanted to do one too.
Thanks for the enlightenment !!!!

BTW...Keep in mind that double pane glass (required for low-E) does not work well for pepper effect. You'll have a ghost image with, well, a ghost.

My OLD aluminum door had single pane (1970s). Amazing how far they've come with insulating
Aluminum AND single pane just don't go well together. It was one of the first things to go in our house when we bought it.
