We are planning on a swamp theme this year. Building a wooden deck, maybe hiding the house with some camo netting, fireflys, ghosts etc. Here's our struggle. We need to have water but don't want to fill the yard with water. We have an HOA (I know, boo) and our lawn will be freshly seeded with winter grass. We can cover it up with plastic for a day but how could we get a cool water look without actual water.
So, I turn to my fellow creative ghouls.
Thank you in advance for your ideas. My creativity is failing on this part.

how about lay down clear plastic sheeting and put some rope lights under for the water color, maybe some saran wrap wodden up for ripples, then add in things that are in a swamp, have the sounds of running water and critters in the background
Don't throw that out, I can make that into a......................

Or use blue party city plastic tablecloths, then you can use white lights under it. Get some camo spray paint colors and randomly and lightly spray it for a boggy look. Those thin plastic tablecloths should let a fair amount of light through.

Don't forget a few fans on low to blow under to make them move. I would go with a colo shinny/silky fabric.

I'm debating the same thing for our swamp theme...no HOA though...when we did a pirate theme a couple years ago we had a small water section that we used a atomizer in a small plastic tub and with water then I covered it with a teal covered sheer fabric...it looked pretty good it was a small area though...I had white lights under the sheer adjacent to the atomizer area but a safe distance from the electricity.

Why not put out a nice Blue fabric, plastic. Add lighting underneath, very dull. Put a very small fan on it, and add a ground fogger on top, like a morning swamp look. This way, it will cover up the blue a bit, and look alot more realistic

I agree with all the above. Blue plastic sheeting lit from underneath with ground fogger to give the illusion of water just beneath the fog.

I think because you're doing a swamp, it wouldn't be blue, I would do a strong ground fogger, and have a path that they go through, roped off and maybe planked like you would in the swamp, to really convince them you just need great ambience noise, the soundtrack will really convince them. water droplets, frogs jumping in, splashes that sort of thing

This is so cool.
I am going to go hunting for some plastic and fabric to see what I can find best. My husband is excited about the idea now too and is planning out a dock and walkway out of palates.
Last night he said, I could probably build a facade for the house, would you like me to work on that?
I love him!
Not sure if we can really accomplish it but we will see.
Thank you for the pics and ideas! I'm not on a hunt for supplies that are fairly cheap.
