Started to make progress on hearse project this week. Had to design it so I could take it apart to remove from basement and be able to store easily. I want to paint it black but Im not sure on what type of primer to use, I also do not want a flat black finish. Should I go with a semi gloss paint or gloss paint? Anyone have advice on getting the finish I am looking for?

Are you using acrylic water based paint or oil based paint...? acrylic is easier, drys faster & can be durable, especially being that it will not left outside 24-7,
oil base is a lil messier, oil smell while it dries, but is a lot more of a better finish as oil paints flow, acrylic shows more brush strokes......... unless you plan on using a sprayer.........
Oil based, lacquer & urethane just has a look to it that is deep, they are just a lil more of a pain to work with, but worth it for a top notch look !!
Hi gloss might be a little too much, a semi gloss, help give it an old / vintage look.
As for acrylic primers, water based- Home depot- Gripper gray ! drys like a rock !! Any primer you get use a gray to help the black cover faster.

Thanks dark lord I like the idea of the vintage look and will go with the better paint. Will post progress. I am also going to add pnuematics to open rear door and a full animatronic driver.

Yours & Obcessed's look great. By not priming the paint the semi black on Obcessed looks a little more like satin than semi. The primer keeps it on top, but the effect of not priming looks good too. I paint for a living, so I have to prime. You may want to test out a piece of same wood you used with primer & one with just couple coats paint & see if there is dif that works better for you.
As for better paint, just really comes down to which is easier for you to use, water based acrylics or oil based........... Oil base is better, but acrylics are pretty darn tough these days !

If i was in your area, i would totally throw down some "old school" brass scroll work pinstriping on it for you !!
