Simple countdown sign.
Version 1 was a rush job in 2006.
Poster board and bad spray paint. No lighting at night.
I got so many comments on it, we built a more 'permanent' sign version 2 for 2007.
Housed a black light in the sign, built numbered plaques to change every year.
However, increasingly, I've been wanting the sign for other purposes. And, the hooks holding the number boards have busted/stripped about a dozen times. Not to mention storing the thing + numbers and touching them all up every year has been a pain in the rear.
So, we simplified everything down for sign version 3.
"Just" a simple chalk board to allow for multipurpose use. Housed the black light again, for fluorescing chalk to be seen at night.
I'm building a larger "announcement" version as well, and will get pics of this lit up later.

The 07' version looked pretty cool in the dark. Sweet idea.

Yes, it was a bittersweet moment. 07 is the better countdown, but was getting beat to hell flipping number panels around every day, not to mention the size...it really didn't fit into my storage situation well at all.
But, on the plus side, now in addition to a countdown, I now have a sign that can be anything. I'm not limited to 2 digits for the countdown.
I'm currently making different colored fluorescing chalks to jazz it up a bit.

I'm a little unhappy with the little black light I bought from Home Depot on clearance for this sign. It's putting off an awful lot of purple light. But, I really don't want to go spend the cash (more than I spent for the housing and light together) for a replacement bulb of better quality.
Still, it makes the chalk pop out at night.

The Announcement sign went up today.
It's a little more involved...
Bob's job.
Fluorescent white paint makes bob stand out at night, and the arm waves back and forth by virtue of a gutted reindeer. Fluorescent chalk makes the writing work at night as well.
Already has traffic slowing to see what the sign says.
