Found these LED battery-operated Fiber Optic Lights at DOLLAR TREE today. Whether or not you use the base with the color-changing LED bulbs in it, I think the fiber bundle as is can be quite useful. I could see using a bright light source that can be triggered to flash on momentarily (like a strobe light) to create a nice effect of a TNT explosion for example. Can't beat $1 for this effect. I know Terra was experimenting with some lighting effects to create sparks and maybe this might be another workable solution for that effect.

Just installed my batteries and wanted to report that you get quite a bit for your dollar. The fiber optic strands measure about 10.5 inches to the band at the end. The base has a button that allows you to turn it off or select one of many color combinations. The LEDs are Red, Blue, and Green. You get solid light color for each color choice. It also does solid color combos like red/blue--not purple but half red/half blue. There's a setting that does a multi color solid (again 3 separate colors). Then there's the color changing setting which rotates colors.
Question for the technical guys: could you substitute a yellow LEDs on the board or would the current be different (thinking yellow would be more "spark" like). I may not have asked the right question but I know that LED have different ratings. Or would you be better off using a separate light source like a strobe and using a colored filter on the light source?
Also if you wanted to paint the fiber strands black and gently "nick" the paint in spots so that some light is emitted in parts of the strand through the nicked portion, what kind of paint would you use?
