Spray paint will eat away styrofoam, so unless you like the texture.. you want to use outdoor latex paint you'd get at a hardware supply store!
Most hardware supply stores will also carry some type of housing insulation which will be a 4x8 sheet of foam material.. some is pink or blue and the other stuff is white.. all of them will work, but some people swear by the pink stuff!
There are several ways to write on tombstones. You can use a wood burner or soldering iron, but beware of the fumes. Or you can use an x-acto knife or dremel tool!

I personally like the "rugged/aged" look of spray paint on the styrofoam. (just have the white stuff here). But eventually I will go with what beavervw has to say and just "age" them myself.
In the past I have used an x-acto knife for the wording and cracks, but this year I plan on using a cheap soldering iron.

Hi Deathtemple,
as everyone said, oil based spray paints eat away at foam. There is a spray paint by Rust-Oleum called Aqua that is water based and won't eat away the foam. But like theedwin said the oil based spray paints do have its uses. I used it in the pic to make the black recessed border in my tombstone.
The foam can be found in many diy home improvement stores....home depot, lowes, menards but some areas of the us have a hard time getting the thicker sheets.
I use a hobby wood burner for my cracks.
GL and have fun!

Deathtemple,
There's a great tutorial out there done by Terra that explains how to do everything! From building to aging and painting. I suggest you check that out.

Check out Terra. Her profile has some how to's in the album section and she has some How to videos posted over on You Tube. I'm in the process of making my first foam tombstone with what she shows on her videos.
