    Hi all,

I wanted to get some opinions on air dry clay if anyone has used it in their props. I am making some Dark Fairies for my theme this year that will do my witches bidding and I want to get fairly detailed with them. I have basic wire masking tape framework done and was thinkin about covering in air dry clay in order to get the definition I want. Anyone experimented with this and how durable it is? Or does anyone have any recomendations on a clay type material that doesnt require baking?

    thanks

Why are you averse to baking? Most small sculptures I've seen are done with something along the lines of Super Sculpey (oven bake clay)

I second Mr. Chicken, Sculpey Polymer Clay & baking is the way to go. I have used a couple (crayola was one) of the air-dry clays and they didn't dry very hard. They ended up a crumbly mess.

I have even used epoxy in a pinch, if it's something you can do quick or is going to get covered.

do you think the wire frame and masking tape under the clay would have any effect on the over bake sculpty. Im not apposed to using it as I prefer it now after ive been fumbling around with the air dry clay.

I have used sculpey with aluminum foil and wire without issue... It's baked at about 275 degrees for 15-20 minutes, I am not sure if that would cause combustion. I would think not.

I've used air dry clay for a large sculpture. I generally followed LaurieBeast's 'The Bride' tutorial. Here's part 1 "The Bride" Tutorial Part 1

I use three kinds of air clay: Celluclay, DAS clay and Paperclay. My favorite was Paperclay. It allows you to make fine details and is easily sandable to make even finer details.
