In my opinion, the authority on Halloween paper maché (and really, just paper maché) is Scott, AKA Stolloween. He has his basic recipe on his site:
    http://www.stolloween.com/?page_id=209

I typically do strips of paper (newspaper/phonebook) and a basic flour, water and salt and then paint with acrylics. I started adding in some white glue after I read his recipe, and it does work just as good.

I have never used the paper pulp medium, but I love the concept and the results are amazing.

I don't think there is a best paper mache recipe out there, just a whole bunch of really good ones.

My recipe is 3 parts water to 1 part elmers white glue. It's easy to make and you can pour it into a spray bottle for easy application.
I also use the brown painters paper. It has about the same texture and weight as newspaper but the solid color helps me see how the project is coming along. The paper also comes in green so it's easy to alternate colors between paper mache coats. Down side is you have to pay for it. A large pumpkin rot paper mache project will cost about $2 in painters paper.

Paper mache projects are great. Have fun!

Frankie's Girl is absolutely correct. Stolloween is the mache master! His work made me look at old fashioned paper mache in a whole new way.

I use about 2 parts water to one part white glue (Elmers) and about a teaspoon of salt. (I'm told the salt helps to prevent mold over the years if it gets wet or damp after the project is done ) Salt is cheap so why not?
