I know this has been talked about before and possibly there are ways to do what I am thinking about but...... I cant find it!
I know this can be hazardous, but I keep thinking about doing this effect. So, at this point I am just asking how it could be done...... still deliberating on whether we will actually do it...
My question is.... can this be done without a battery or a char charger?
Is there something out there, such as a wall wart or such that would produce this type of sparks?
How many amps does a car battery charger put out? I hesitate buying a charger just for this purpose!
There was a demonstration at Transworld in March that was similar to this .... He wore gloves and held metal knives that sparked when they were touched together... the set up was a battery pack that was strapped at his waist so it was portable. Was really cool.
Any ideas?

I've only seen it with the battery or car batt charger they put out DC current so I think they would be the safest a wall wart may not give a realistic amount of spark and usually when you put hot to ground on a 12v battery or any batter it will heat up take a 9v battery and put a quarter on top covering pos and neg and hold it for awhile you will freak how hot it gets

Thats all I have found too, but I know is can be done.... I just know nothing about it.
And I don't want to experiment !

I'm pretty sure Terra was going to do this. let me go look.......

okay, here's the thread. not sure if this is what you're talking about.
hope it helps.
Help... Fake falling sparks?

Ok so here is something I have played with. Take a chain link fence, Attach it to a wall.. Size is up to you... attach the NEG side of a car battery by jumper cables to the bottom of the fence... Now take an old broken chainsaw with no chain and attach the POS side of the battery with a LONG BLACK HEAVY wire to the bar on the chainsaw.
Now you can start up the chainsaw and make lots of noise and if that don’t make the kiddies p p there pants, quickly drag the chainsaw bar across the chain link fence and sparks will go everywhere!
It’s a 12v battery and you don’t have to worry about getting shocked UNLESS you’re standing in water that the battery is grounded to.... Not likely!!
Do notice I said run the bar across the fence "QUICKLY" That is because if you let the bar sit on any piece for any amount of time it will "weld" the bar to the fence and possibly make the battery blow up.... But as long as you drag it quickly you are golden....
Something I would recommend is putting a quick disconnect between the chainsaw cord and the pos side to the battery... That way if for ANY reason you do stick the bar to the fence, you can just kick the connection off. Pull the bar off, reconnect the cord and continue on. Be a good idea to put the battery in a box just to be on the safe side.
Like I said, I have done this and it looks SOOOO cool!!!!

Thats what I am planning on doing Kammo... just wondered if there was another way of doing this..? Maybe with a 12v wall wart ...
I guess I would have to wonder ..... why do people use car batteries or chargers for this instead of a 12v wall tranformer that has a lower amperage? Is there a reason for this that I don't know?

I would suggest using a battery charger. I have a 200amp battery charger that I have used before. It works awesome. Both a battery and charger will work great, but the battery charger has but in overload protection. Like Kammo said if you let it sit to long it will weld itself to the wall. I have found that the charger will not do this as easily. My battery charger has a max of 200amps. Most batteries will have about 600 to 1000 amps. You might try Craigslist for a cheap charger if you choose this route.

Yeah Lynn, a wall wort is not gonna give you the amps you need to get the big sparks.. It will spark but it will be puny..
I agree with Rundown on the charger if you are scared of the welding issue. The charger will shut off if you stick the bar on the fence too long and it sticks... Plus you dont have the pesky battery explosion possibility lol..
Make sure you take lots of pictures and video of the setup.. we would love to see it in action and setup.

OK, sounds like the charger is the way to go.... now on to finding a cheap one!
Thanks everyone..... I'm just a little leary about this one but I think I'll give it a shot.
Now if the 'powers that be' let me go with it!!!
