I'm thinking about investing in one of these this year. Does anyone have one, or seen one before?

No, that's a new one. Should be just a basic color organ, so it should work out fine.

I didn't find that unit on their web site, but I recommend these:

I have two of them and they work great. You may be able to get them cheaper than $20. I've seen them on sale for as little as $10. You won't be disappointed.I...have many names...

I noticed that Otaku, so I e-mailed them and asked them why the picture looks different. We'll see what they say.

I actually wanted to use this outside.

No problem. Any lightning effect I've ever seen says "indoor use only", but that applies to the box itself. I keep the boxes, CD player and amplifier inside the house and run the extension cords out a window to the lights. Each box runs 500W of photoflood bulbs. The small aluminum clamp light fixtures work great for attaching the lights to tree branches, gutters etc.

I have the same one that Otaku linked to, and it works great (and got it a few years ago for $10 - woot!).
I've used it outside if it's nice and dry, but like Otaku said, if you have an extension cord, it still could be used for the effect outside while the unit is inside.
The Halloween version has become scarce, but there is a x-mas version that is advertised for "dancing lights on your tree" that is the same box and manufacturer but in a white case with a x-mas tree on it - works just the same.

and here's the most recent thread discussing them:

You might also try a chauvet strobe light with a chauvet strobe controller (it has an audio or should I say sound sensitive function so all you need is a little thunder and your in buisness). You can find the controller for about $30 and depending on the size strobe it can cost $50 for a 75watt up to $130 for a 750 watt strobe, and you can link up to 6 of them together with one controller.

I also use the chauvet light controller along with 2 750 watt strobes. I just set the controller next to a speaker with thunderstorm track playing in a loop. Let me know if you have any other questions.
