Hope you guys can give some guidance on modifying a mask I have. It's a Rubies' 3/4 mummy head mask that I would love to turn into a prop for my Egyptian theme. The problem I have using it is that I really don't care for the coloring of the mask and would love to paint it. Rubies' product labeling says it's vinyl. Has anyone successfully modified a vinyl mask in this way and if so what type of paint did you use (ie. acrylic paint)? I'm concerned about the paint adhering and don't want to have it flake off.
Should I decide to add some aged gauze strips to cover the original ones on the mask, is there a special glue I should use?
One last tip I could use is what do you guys use to fill the hollow space of your masks that you turn into props? Should I start with one of those styrofoam head forms and keep adding padding to it? This mummy mask is an adult mask and since it slips over one's head is pretty roomy. I put the mask over my head and still had plenty of room. No open mouth to be concerned with but I will need to come up with eyes or eye sockets.
BTW here's the mask (Rubies 3454) I have: http://www.amazon.com/Costume-Masks-...4833088&sr=8-2
BTW I like the new Rubies mummy mask (2722) that's on their website right now:

I just painted a v inyl doll's head and it turned out great. First I used a special spray on primer made for plastic (PVC?, vinyl?) lawn furniture. I then used regular cheap acrylic paint.

I can see why you like that mask....very nice (I like the off set jaw, a nice touch)
I have had problems with paint flaking off too.
What type of primer should we use ? What is the brand name?????"Imagination is the theater of the mind wherein true horror is enacted and nightmares become reality" - Vincent Price
