Hey Folks...need a little help. I am planning on making a jack in the box this year but wasn't sure about some of the electronics. What I am interested in doing is when triggered, having the crank arm begin moving along with some circus music, then after a few seconds, have the jack in the box come out of the box with a few strobe lights. Any and all help or ideas is appreciated.

Nice to see another haunter from Pittsburgh. It sounds like you might want to consider buying a small controller like a Picoboo to handle your animation and sound. I used one last year in my morgue and it worked out great. It gives you a lot of bang for your buck and saves a LOT of time.

You can do this a few different ways. I will tell you the cheapest way to get everything you want.

    Things you'll need

    1. small motor, Deer Head, or any slow turning motor
    2. Delay relay. I would use a 5 second delay relay
3.Wal mart motion detector or any motion detector
4.Air cylinder with a throw somewhere around 18 inches
    5. Solenoid valve
    6. Digital Voice Recorder or a loop cassette. A second one if you want sound when the clown pops up'
    7. Dryer hose

Once someone activates the motion detector the relay comes on and starts playing the music and turning the crank. After 5 seconds the relay activates the air cylinder and the clown pops up, the strobes turns on and sound if you choose to have it.
