While posting a response under the Wolf thread where I gave a referral to Van Dyke's Taxidermy store, I noticed while on their website that they sell forms for rug heads (for bears, wolves, lions, etc.). That gave me the idea wouldn't it be cool to do a prop based around an animated animal rug. The head forms are open-mouthed and VDs also sells hinged sets of teeth, and one could easily pick up "fur" from a fabric store to make the rug shape. Does anyone have any idea how hard it would be to animate the mouth so that it opened and closed? I can just see a cabin scene with a bear rug that gets triggered by a sensor and comes to life as the ToTers pass by. A good roar would be the icing on the cake.
Here's a link to their "rug" products.

it should be simple, mount the motor in the head with a simple bell crank mechanism similiar to a wiper motor when the mouth opens trigger a recording

Sounds like a cool idea!
Might use the same set-up those newer Boris skulls use--a string running from a small motor that pulls the jaw open when triggered by sound (like a color organ).

I was thinking the same thing DaveintheGrave! Even if you just got some sort of bear mask (or made one) you could cover the Boris skull (or Gemmy skull) and let it talk away. Those skulls sit on a base that does let the jaw move freely, but the "bear" would be facing up at about a 50 - 60 degree angle rather than looking forward.
Interesting concept, and cool link Ghost of Spookie!

Just had to post this. Did you guys know that Gemmy had made a singing bear rug too??! OMG they build everything under the sun. Saw this auction over on Ebay today minutes before it closed and with no bids on it at the time (and no I didn't put the bid on it BTW) and had to laugh. For it's uniqueness it probably was worth the $50 it went for. I wonder what song/s it sang and whether the mouth moved. Does anyone remember this at all?
Scroll down for the pic of it and description. The pictures and descrip will probably be up for a few days or weeks.
