I'm doing several hallways in my garage this year, and I' going to need to do some doors. I'm aking for a way which does no implies buying doors, but an easy and efficient way to do so, and of course, the doors to look realistic. So, any ideas you have, I'd thank you for them...
Where Hinges creek in doorless chambers... And where strange and Frightening sounds Echo...through the halls... Whenever candlelights flicker... where the air is DEATHLY STILL... that is the time when GHOSTS are present... Practicing their terror, with GOULISH DELIGHT...

Look on craigslist for free hollow core doors. people are always trying to get rid of those. then you can distress them and decorate them to look like old fashioned doors.

    Cardboard is another option.
Use layers to give the impression of depth - thin strips for moulding, make a raised panel, or multiple raised panels, cut out some scroll designs...

Get some old latex paints, and mix them together to get a nice dark brown (finally a use for all those half-cans of house paint) - coat your cardboard door in that for a base coat, and then start adding highlights to get a wood grain. Or, blotch on highlights to try for a "peeling paint" kind of look. Experiment with different ideas.

Start now, and you'll have plenty of time.
Hell is an eternity of getting up at 4am to nothing but decaf coffee...

2009 photos and 2008 photos ...uhmmm...and what I have evolving...

Do they have to open, and how close will your patrons be?
If they are far off and they do not have to open I would do a large painted muslin flat.
    Flat Building 101
However if they have to be opened, or if your patrons are too close, I would recommend the cardboard Idea. Or do Styrofoam that you gouge designs in to with sculpting tools (like insulation panels).... just make sure you use water based paints (acrylic craft paint, latex house paint) with the foam and not spray paint as Spray paint will MELT it.

Images of Halloween, projects for Halloween, and rants about Halloween, all year long. Halloween is Beautiful.

Here was the finished product. I had it done in a day start to finish, because it was a last minute addition.

That foam door looks amazing Noah! Great job!

Can you give us an idea of where these will be placed or what kind of wall they will be attached to? That might give us a better idea of how to help you out.

Wow, the paint job on that door is just amazing. With my painting talent, if I tried something like that it would look just like painted foam!

Sun of a gun.... that door is FAR better than anything I would have suggested... I mean, they sell those flimsy honeycomb-core doors for $19 each at Lowe's, but they wouldn't look nearly as good as this! Besides, it ain't about buying something to do the job... it's about BUILDING something to do the job!!!

    Excellent work!
