I usually save grass cuttings from my last lawn cutting and use those. After halloween just run the lawn mower back over it and it gets sucked up unless it rains alot which this year it did. Ended up raking it into a bag. I wonder if using burlap following the same process will work out. That way there are holes for light to come in and you can leave it out longer. May have to test that.

I think instead of dying the towels look for brown colored ones at thrift stores, or brown fleece type material or from the fabric shoppe however many people have crappy towels in the hose so this is a good solution, instead of dye you may just want to use mud soak the towel in mud for a few days and it may have the same characteristics cool and simple solution

I would think that you could use any brown colored material. Terrycloth has a nice texture and would be heavy enough to stay put though. I would also think that the terrycloth could be "lumped" up to look like uneven ground. I think I'm going to try putting a slit in the towel so that I can insert the head of my bloody shovel through it!
