I potentially have access to a large projector for Halloween this year, and I'm trying to think of awesome effects that could be achieved with it. I can't paint it or anything because it's borrowed, and it also probably can't be outside. Any ideas?

Depending on your type of haunt (yard display / walkthrough / combo / professional), you could perhaps set up a large scrim, and project appearing / disappearing ghosts onto it - this could even be done if the projector were inside your house, through a window (open window would be better, so it won't make a glare on the glass). Or, perhaps a nice housing for it outside, with an opening for the lens (make certain to allow for good air movement - projectors build up heat quite quickly).

Garage opening? Hang sheets and project a movie from inside the garage, where it would be seen from outside? Kind of a moving backdrop to your haunt.

Images (static or moving) on the windows of your house, perhaps? Eyes, shadows, demons, flames, etc...all done from inside, so the projector's nice and safe.
Hell is an eternity of getting up at 4am to nothing but decaf coffee...

2009 photos and 2008 photos ...uhmmm...and what I have evolving...

What theme haunt are you planning for this year? That will go a long way to helping find uses for the projector. BTW I am extremely envious of you

I really like the scrim idea, if I can only find something cheap and durable to make one out of to live outside.

My theme is just a "haunted house." "Dead End Manor was abandoned many years ago and has had several enterprising squatters, such as a mad scientist, a couple witches, and even some circus freaks. None of them really ever left, though..." There's also a graveyard and a section of woods complete with eerie silhouettes of creatures unknown and a hangman.

You can always go for a Madame Leota (or similar) effect

Anybody have any ideas about what kind of material would make a good durable scrim? I'm thinking maybe window screen material.

the hallowindow thing, while neat, doesn't really fit the feeling of my haunt, which is general unease.

I like to leave my visitors with a feeling an uncomfortable feeling, not necessarily scared, but hopefully unable to sleep.

Also, depending on the weather on the Saturday before, I might do a screening of a bunch of scary movies with the projector in the garage, or just inside on a wall, for people to watch if they want during my party.

We used a scrim in the back of our hearse last year and projected a video of a woman in a white dress laying horizontal above the coffin. We just went to a fabric store and got some sheer black fabric for the scrim, it worked great!. You couldn't tell it was there and the image projected on it had a perfect transparent effect.
