I put my hand about 8 inches above the holes. It was warm but not more so than warm water. At 14 inches I could barely feel any heat at all. But coming out of the holes? Yup that is scalding. The steam is superheated to around 320 degrees and is at a pressure of 5 bars. 75 PSI. This is low humidity steam. Big volume but very little actual molecular weight. Thus it loses heat rapidly as it expands in the open atmosphere. Unpressurized steam retains heat much longer. Any gas escaping at high velocity loses heat rapidly.
