That is a scary tombstone! I like pneumatics better but that's a neat use for a drill.

Very clean electric box, high quality assembly!!!
I like to use electric motors for crank mechanism, moving bodies, FCG spiders, simple things.
Windshield motors are a better use then a drill, BUT, drills are usually free and lying around the house to use

You could put it out in the middle of nowhere with a battery. I think it would also be good for haunted trail types.

That is a cool little prop but way way too much work for just a pop up. There are so many easier ways to do this, But it also looks like the person who built this is very electronic savy, so probably had a lot of fun in the process of building. Besides, wether it's hard or easy all that really matters is the end result. I do really like the looks of the UV lighting.

Any ideas on how to make a simpler one using a drill?
I have like 3 drills lying around waiting for a project like this....

I have a simple idea, but it might be a little noisy. Do the drills you are referring to have clutches on them ? If so, what about building the same rig as the one in the video and making a hard physical stop at the raised position of the rig ? Basically have the drill run it up until it hits the stop, set the clutch to slip once it is up there, and then have a spring or bungee cord pull it back down once power is taken away. Then you don't need to reverse anything, simply just power the drill on and off.
Might be noisy, but it would be simple.....
Those clutches are made to slip and I am doubting it is going to harm the drill in any way unless you are going to keep it up there for minutes at a time.... Just a thought ??
