Decided that this year I would add a small pirate display somewhere in the haunt so have been working on some props. This is one of a few I have completed
The chest is made from styrofoam, covered in paper mache, then plumbers tape glued to resemble the metal. the studs on the tape are thumb tacks glued into place. The chest was then painted black, then gunmetal acrylic painted on the tape and the chest painted with brown acrylic to resemble wood.
The padlock is made from styrofoam, the hasp is from a thin piece craft sheet foam as are the brackets for the handles, again thumb tacks glued in place to resemble studs
The contents of the chest includes: Poker chips spray painted gold and silver for the coins. The gold and silver cups are the tops of the spray cans. The goblet is made from a yogurt pot, small piece of 1/2" pvc pipe for the stem and a piece of scrap plastic for the base, then spray painted silver and stick on gems stuck on the rim.
My wife suggests that I make this an how to, which I would be prepared to do if anyone wants, the second chest may well become a reaper gift![]()

Wow, this looks so nice. I've never thought of making foam shapes and strengthening it with paper mache. Great tip!

I have never really cared for the pirate theme but you guys always make creating the treasure chest look like so much fun...I guess one could fit in with my Little Mermaid collection

Nice job with yours!

I do have one suggestion that worked for mine, that will make it more appealing. Get a few different color flashing LED lites, and put a few on top, and burry a couple. The flashng gives depth and adds interest to the gold and gems. Nice job and good way to make use of common items around the home!
I love the screaming!

Very nicely done!
I am planning on building a treasure chest as well for my haunt next year. I am going to add a string or two of flashing LED Xmas lights to give the twinkling effect to the jewels....
I am making mine out of wood as it will be outside for the entire month of October and it needs to be able to stand up the the weather......
Yours came out great.....

The ships' doctor warned me that I've been partaking in too much wine, women and song and told me that I should cut back a bit.........I am really going to miss the singing.....

That is just wonderful, even though it makes me look foolish for all the $$ I've spent on mine! I so wish I'd thought of painting poker chips for the coins - would have saved me a fortune.
Great job!
