I need some advice on make-up & scars. This is my first year even attempting make-up. I figure I'll practice on the kids and by the time October rolls around it may look presentable. Here are a couple examples from today:

So here are some questions:
1) Base material. As can be seen above I was just using some paper towels and the texture shows right through. Perhaps tissue should be used under the latex?
2) Skin tone make-up. I simply went to Wallgreens and picked up a couple shades of Cover Girl. My problem is the stuff is really expensive and it contains perfume. The scent really sucks. Isn't there a brand that is scentless? Is there a more reasonable cost brand (although this is a minor issue compared to the scent). I would like to get multiple shades to match various skin tones, but at $12 for each shade I could quickly spend some cash.
3) The samples came out awful shinny. I suppose I should powder it or something??? With what?
I thank you all for any help.
P.S. I am male and have no make-up experience, so help on make-up in general would be appreciated.

Platsil Gel 10. Youtube it. You'll be impressed.

True pain and suffering he brought to them all
Away ran the children to hide in their beds,
for fear that the devil would chop off their heads..."
