Zombie, as far as making your spider "spit" i am guessing you would need a solenoid valve linked to either a timer mechanism or something like a prop controller card which will then trigger the solenoid to release a blast of air for a specific period of time, then close the valve until the next event. There are plenty of documents scattered throughout the web discussing this.
I am going to be using this controller on my project this year

Here is a great page i have found discussing the basics in pneumatics and prop control as well as solenoids.

Use a cheap air brush from harbor freight

I think he means an air brush (pen type hand held spray gun) that you can disassemble and modify to make the spitter you want. It already has a nozzle and the water reservoir. In theory, it could work with very little modification............

I've made a few sprayers both air and air/water misting. see my 2008 display link in my signature and you can see the one I made for my spider. That was a venturi fitting that sucked up a very samll amount of water and atomized it into the spray.

You are in OH, like PA I am guessing your Halloween nights can be a bit chilly, so you may want to think twice about wetting anyone too badly.
That past Halloween I used 2 ceiling mounted dry sprayers mounted in the ceiling blowing down from behind the patrons. After testing various nozzles, I got the best performance from rubber (blow gun) nozzle tips.

As far as valves go, you can get away with a simple Normally Closed solenoid valve. Can be found pretty cheaply. You just need to decide what voltage coil you want to work with and what sort of trigger/timer setup you want.
