So I've finished my first tombstone for 2010 and I thought it might be nice to share the progress pics with everyone.

What are you using, a soldering iron or dremel? They look great by the way
We stopped checking for monsters under our beds when we realized they were inside of us

After checking out your detailing, I'm gonna have to think about revisiting the X-acto knife technique again.

Looks amazing! I love the detail. That can't be easy to do.

Amazing! What coloring technique did you use to maintain the small details in the carved surfaces?
I've been coloring mine with timted cement wash. It looks for all the world like real stone, but it's so thick that I lose any small detail work.
Not that I'd ever steal your idea, I'd be scared of losing the tombstones to theft.Wolfman

The detail work is actually very easy. It is a bit time consuming to cut out all of the letters with the X-acto, but the result is well worth it. The pitted surfaces are created by running the very tip of my swiss army knife in small circles over the surfaces to be pitted. The blade catches the foam, pulling off tiny wads of foam, which "popcorn" off of the foam leaving behind a nice uniform pitted texture. The cracks are done simply by slicing into the foam, the blade of my swiss army knife while randomly jerking the blade from side to side.
As for the painting, I use a few light sprays of Black acrylic spray paint in select areas to add to the worn look. The entire stone is then painted with (slightly thinned down) Black Acrylic hobby paint. When the black is mostly dry, the stone is drybrushed with different shades of gray in vertical brush strokes.
The Moss is a sprinkle on grass mixture created by Woodland Scenics for miniature landscape modelling.

Mark me down as totally impressed. You definitely have skill. Love the moss idea. I was just asking about that on an earlier thread.
