I finally gave in and bought a fog machine last year. A cheap one, from Target. It worked ok, but tried using it outside and it failed me. I have decided to move that machine indoors, but was still hoping for some outdoor fog. I basically just want the forest on either side of my driveway to be opaque so the lights therein have a creepier effect.
Any suggestions on what type of machine I should get?

Depends on what you mean by "failed"...was there just too little fog?
Or were there issues with air movement dissipating your fog?
If it's just a matter of volume (no breeze), then you may have luck with adding another couple of cheap foggers, or paying a bit more for a higher wattage machine (a lot of the Target / Kmart / Walgreens cheapies are just 400 watts).
If it's a matter of light breezes (or outright wind) blowing the fog away, then it won't matter how much fog you make - the atmosphere will win within a matter of minutes.
(that's been my dilemma every year but this past one - always always always some kind of breeze blowing away my fog, no matter what I did to keep it around)
Wind-breaks might be a possibility, depending on your haunt, the size of your property, and the direction of the breezes.Hell is an eternity of getting up at 4am to nothing but decaf coffee...

^ The wind was not a problem as it was non existent. Here's a picture of how much fog was produced on average:

I will have to check later on to make sure, but i think the machine was just a 400. I know that, eventually, I'm probably gonna have to buy 2 machines if I keep my haunt at its current location, especially if I want as much fog as I do.
The my ideal would be for the TOTers to be practically lost in the fog. For them to have a 5 feet visibility radius.

I always like to put them in bushes near walk ways, that way it will rise up and disperse into more fog. Rather than just a really dense small jet of it.
We stopped checking for monsters under our beds when we realized they were inside of us

I feel your pain. I also need a fog solution. I have three of the cheap-o's and have decided that if I want a true fog effect I really need to spend the coin and buy a few good ones.

This year I'm getting some Froggy's Fog Juice. I hear it makes really thick and opaque fog.

I bought my first fog machine last year and got a vei v935 and I was not disappointed. I didn't even have it on the highest settings and when there was no wind the GF was telling me to turn it lower. Wind of course is the biggest issue with fog because even a little can totally mess up the effect. I had superb ground fog for about 20 min on halloween night then a little bit of wind came up and it turn into pea soup but whatever. My new problem is getting cheap fog juice I went through a gallon a night when I ran the machine and at $20 a pop that gets expensive.
Here is where i got mine Minions Web Product Pages - VEI Fog Machines - FOG MACHINE VEI V935 DJ Fogger Deluxe 1200 Watt Wired Timer & Wireless Remote

^Ok. that's helpful. I misguidedly stocked up on the Target fog juice when it was on sale after Halloween this year. Any suggestions for what kind of juice to use? And can all juices be used in all machines?
I just did a search for continuous output foggers and this came up: Chauvet H1300 Hurricane Fog Machine
I don't even know if it's really continuous output, but it seems like a good machine. Anybody have one?
