    Hey folks,

This forum provides some excellent stimulation for over-the-top Halloween efforts. I purchased my first house in 2007 and I've been gradually cranking up my Halloween display. This year (2009) was my first year for a pirate-themed display. I gained many good ideas from this forum, but also came up with my own idea. I decided to turn the five front windows of my house into cannon gunports. Using some luan plywood, cardboard sonotubes, metal ductwork, and some black paint, I was able to bang out (please excuse the pun) five cannon in just two days. Here are the results:

I used some strings of flashing white Christmas lights inside the barrels to make it appear the cannons were firing. I connected my iPod to a boombox outside, and played cannon firing ringtones in between songs from the
"Pirates of the Caribbean" soundtrack. The whole thing was fairly simple and low-tech (no synchronization between the flashes and sounds), but pretty effective nonetheless.

Let me know if you want more information on building the window inserts. Each "cannon" is one piece and pretty light weight, and can be popped in and out of a window in seconds.

Well, I guess I'm the first that gets to say... freakin sweet!

Now you just have to pulse some fog through them in time with the booms!

I see compressed air shooting out, confetti, fog shooting from some of the guns. What a cool concept. Pirates swinging from ropes with a knife in their teeth! Oops, I lost myself in the moment, RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. Nice job!!!
    I love the screaming!

Thanks everybody! The cannons are pretty easy to construct. I wrote up some basic instructions and posted them to the tutorial section: Pirate window cannons
    Have fun scaring the neighbors!
